At Walker Road, we want to take church membership seriously. Church membership is something altogether different than a membership in a club or a gym. It is a commitment to join together with other people for our common spiritual good. Taking church membership seriously means taking other Christians, and their walk with God, seriously. It also means that we want them to take our walk with God seriously. So, when people join Walker Road, they come before the entire church family and publicly sign their name to this covenant, signaling their promise to commit themselves both to God, and to their church family at Walker Road. “I have been led by the Spirit of God to receive Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, and on the basis of that profession of faith I have been baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I do now, in the presence of God, and this covenant community, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with them as one body in Christ. Therefore:
I promise to walk together with my brothers and sisters in Christ in Christian love.
(John 13:35, 1 Corinthians 13, Galatians 6:1-5, 10)
I promise to care for my church family in the love of God.
(Ephesians 4:31-32)
I promise to let the Word of God, as contained in the Bible, to be the final authority for all of life.
(2 Timothy 3:15-17)
I promise to support the unity, mission, vision, and values of this congregation by my regular attendance at worship, faithful stewardship of my life and gifts, committed prayers, and by submission to the authority of this congregation and it’s leadership.
(Romans 12:9-21, Galatians 6:1-5, Philippians 2:1-11, 1 Timothy 5:17-21, Hebrews 10:21-25, Hebrews 13:17)
I promise to engage in regular personal spiritual disciplines including Bible reading and prayer.
(Psalms 119, Luke 18:1, 1 Thessalonians 5:17)
I promise to strive for a Spirit-filled life that is different from the world, minds heavenly things, seeks the fruit of the Spirit, and that is filled with love, joy, peace, gentleness, patience, goodness, faith, meekness, and hope.
(Ephesians 5:18-6:9, Colossians 3:1-4:6, Galatians 5:16-26)
I promise to avoid gossip, unforgiveness, anger, drunkenness, illicit drug usage, and pornography and to mortify my flesh so as to refrain from any activity that would bring dishonor to the Lord Jesus and to disrupt the unity, mission, vision, and values of this congregation.
(Romans 8:13, Colossians 3:1-13)
I promise to regularly examine my spiritual condition and confess my faults to Christ, and my church family.
(2 Corinthians 13:5, James 5:16)
I promise to be committed to the command of Jesus to preach the gospel to myself, my family, my friends, and all nations.
(Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 15:15-20, Luke 24:45-49, Acts 1:8)
I promise to prefer others above myself and take care not to offend those who may be weaker in the faith.
(Romans 12 -14, 1 Corinthians 11-14)
I promise that when I leave this church family I will quickly join with a Biblically faithful church.
(Hebrews 10:21-25)
I now ask that my church family hold me accountable to this covenant through faithful proclamation of the gospel, acts of discipline when necessary, and regular prayer for my personal walk with God.
(Matthew 18:15-20. James 5:16)
